COMING PREPARED

To come prepared, some personal preparation is recommended. Dr. Tingey's text, Dual Control: Science As Applied to Organizational Performance and an associated reader are available through University Readers [a link to the Methods-Based Management package will soon be provided]. To be fully prepared to absorb the messages and models of the Methods-Based Management Conference, you should review this material in advance.

Though the Dual Control text itself is 164 pages long, made up of ten discrete chapters, the reader covers almost 1,800 pages of class literature, cited in each Dual Control chapter along with study questions. They provide a foundation for breakthrough possibilities for you and your organization. Though application of Methods-Based Management is comprised of eleven steps, an understanding of this foundational literature and the key concepts of Dual Control are important for your success.

Principally written in the 1990s, the Dual Control work describes Dr. Tingey's learning path as he applied the new information processing concepts he learned at that time to the commonly-accepted business literature, standards in practice, and the application of technology to the missions of organizations. The book documents a path for executives, administrators, and managers to understand concepts underlying the quality movement and lean production from the framework of this new information processing model.

Truly, the generative taxonomy model does constitute the silver bullet that has been sought, the common business language through which all models and all functions can be united. Though such a silver bullet's existence has been held in question, it has been called for in the literature and in practice. A common means of logical expression, available to all, is a development clearly in line with the objectives of the quality/lean movements. Understanding that one does exist, to be employed in straightforward ways, opens new avenues to organizations that warrant study and deep understanding.
